Shreds=Rubble...

All of my previous drawings, roughly 100 angry abstract pieces all gessoed over, and a collection of my random household documents I had been saving for an occasion like this, became shreds in a large translucent blue box.

And so, Ariana and Arianne, made a date to macerated the shreds.

Last Saturday, January 31, 2009, they macerated for seven hours with only two short breaks in the process. By the end of the day the shreds of paper transformed into paper rubble.

I call it "rubble" because it resembles jack-hammered concrete. It is a beautiful grey color, with speckles of white.

They created Rubble Mountain.

My work has always been influenced by my experiences traveling and making friends throughout the United States. Graduating from college left me at a standstill and my life is much more static than it has ever been before. As a result my work has begun to explore the connections and differences between this static lifestyle and a nomadic one. During my adolescence I became deeply involved with the music scene in Florida. Subsequently, relationships formed and the punk rock, hardcore movement influenced my development, and guided my lifestyle. The music and people were of great importance to me during the pubescent confusion of high school and I learned, above all, that staying true to your beliefs and being positive are the only way to be.

Furniture, especially chairs, has been a staple in my work and continues to impact me. The figurative and functional qualities of these stationary objects were features I explored visually and spatially at the beginning of my undergraduate study. These objects were usually constructed of wood or metal. As I delved deeper into the history of art, I began to think about the pieces sculpturally and started working on conceptual drawings. Corners, light and shadow guided these drawings. Installation and process art influence the way I see and think about interior space and presentation. The quality of line in the installations and the evidence of process leftover in the drawings challenge the viewer's sense of perspective, making it a visual journey for them. I began to watch the relationships people have with these spaces and, consequently, with each other. The elusive nature of people's passive sexual interactions and slight gestures of affection have a sense of romanticism, even from a distance.

I have been using paper, plexi glass and paint because of the lightweight and portable qualities, something that I connect with a nomadic lifestyle. The materials and processes function as visual representations of moods and feelings, conveying my anxieties and confidence. My work challenges what is exposed and not exposed. I strive for a sterile, ghostlike presentation of my drawings and installations because I see them as a functional expression of the loss of movement in my life. Each painting and sculpture is evaluated, obsessed over, and removed. Layers of paint of paper, shreds of drawings and reorganized text from notebooks are processed into the work, furthering the sense of searching and yearning for something out of reach.

I have found that simplicity holds the greatest amount of Love.

This may sound fanciful, well that's because it is.

"Chasing rainbows" , as my Dad calls it.

Metaphorically this is what I am looking for in my drawings, and sculptures.

Looking into and beyond the sameness in my installations.

They are self portaits...... in an odd and bit distrubing way. I decided to make these right after I completed the postcards. It was a great transition from small to large.

The last six pieces of my 10 image portfolio will be completed this weekend. All photos and an updated Artist's Statement will be up by Monday, January 19.

I am really excited to complete this set of application for Residencies. It has been as rewarding as stressful, and overall, I can't wait to get back to the shredding of the paper, organizing of the letters, and slapping of the brush.

So much more to come in 2009.

Here I am.

Sitting in the room that is filled with wonderful ideas.

In here the materials flow, wall to floor, to wall again.

I see myself in these moments of explosion, where paint shatters upon woven shreds.

I know it won't last much longer.

I make just enough time to have a brief conversation with each piece of paper.

I inhale each movement of graphite over the mountains, into the hills.

There you are.

I feel everything lost again.

Hiding again.

The glitter always reminds me of what is just beyond that fence.

A brief introduction...

My name is Ariana, I graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design with a Bachelors of Fine Art Degree for Painting and Sculpture in May of 2008. I am currently living in Sarasota, FL and continuing the body of work I began in August of 2007.

I have worked in many different styles, forms, and materials, but I found that paper, paint, and corners speak to me allowing a conversation to exsist between artist and project.

I am currently doing drawing of landscapes, working on the wall with paper to create installations, and 22"x30" framed drawings.
